DAY 32: ICF: it's a SNAP!

On the first day of snapping our "lego" forms together Brent said to Blaine "Lisa said this morning that she hopes a concrete house is worth it!"  I am the one who has been dragging my feet on the type of construction. He wanted to get it on the record with another witness that I actually said that.  Blaine always assures me that no one regrets building a concrete home.

Brent has researched this type of home building for more than five years.  A year ago we were fortunate to meet Blaine who has walked us through this process.  Here are a few things I have learned from a girl's perspective, a girl who knows nothing about construction.

(Can't turn this picture, new blogger here....)

These are the forms.  An entire semi of forms was delivered to the lot.  Each box about 150 pounds and Brent and a neighbor unloaded the entire semi.  There are teeth on the forms that snap together.  The styrofoam is cut with a serrated knife to form the windows, door, and to make the forms fit. Styrofoam was flying everywhere and the kids had fun planning with it.  Actually, the girls spent most of the time watching and playing in the dirt mounds.  Cole worked SOLID for two days and was a machine alongside Brent.

We haven't downloaded the "plantcam" that shows all of us putting the forms together.  The forms rest directly on the footings.  Rebar is placed every 12 inches vertically and horizontally.

But then we ended up with a basement that looks like this:
